Like everyone else, I too got lost a million times dealing with iPhone Dev Team's naming of their jailbreaking and carrier unlocking tools. So I'm dedicating an article to distinguish between YellowSn0w, RedSn0w, UltraSn0w and the newly popular term PurpleSn0w
You need to know the difference between unlocking a CARRIER and Jailbreaking the iPhone. Read one of my previous article about the difference by CLICKING here.
YellowSn0w
YellowSn0w is a set of applications to CARRIER Unlock the iPhone 3G. This unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This is not an unlocking solution for iPhone 3GS. Currently, 0.9.6 Beta is available for iPhone 3G unlocking.
UltraSn0w
UltraSn0w is the hottest and the most happening carrier unlocking tool as on the date of blogging. UltraSn0w 0.9 version is out which has the following features.
- Works on both iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS
- Works on hacktivated devices also
- Works regardless of how you jailbroke your device (QuickPWN, RedSn0w etc)
- Doesn’t require a separate patch as each new firmware comes out.
- Doesn’t install any additional daemon (in case we're worried of background processes)
- Has no race conditions
- No popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues
- Is almost 7000 times smaller than its nearest competition (as claimed by iPhone Dev Team)
- Is available now via Cydia

RedSn0w
Redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation).
The above 3 products is from the iPhone Dev Team.
PurpleSn0w
PurpleSn0w is from a freelance developer named George Hotz. He ain't the part of iPhone Dev Team. PurpleSn0w claims to be a better unlock compared to UltraSn0w and the YellowSn0w. But according to Dev Team, PurpleSn0w uses 6900 times more RAM than UltraSn0w .
Possible Problems :
1) Hotz's exploit overwrites an arbitrary block of memory one megabyte in size. This means that eventually the area of memory PurpleSn0w uses will be corrupted and 1 MB of baseband code will be corrupted until next reboot.
2) purplesn0w uses 6900 times more RAM than ultrasn0w and doesn’t let the OS know that it’s using it, so the Operating System of iPhone thinks it’s still free to use. When it does use it, the baseband will crash.
